0 Samsung Announces New App Store

The muddy world of smartphone apps is the latest fad in cell phones, thanks to the ever-growing iPhone App Store. BlackBerry jumped on the bandwagon, Nokia too. And now Samsung has announced the Samsung Application Store to show they’re not behind the times. Of course, whether the apps will actually be worth your time remains to be seen.
Of course, there are some good signs; for instance, Samsung has Electronic Arts, Gameloft, Capcom and TAITO on deck to create apps. There are 300 apps planned for the launch of the Application Store, which goes live on September 14.

The other problem is that you can’t just put these apps on any Samsung phone you may have, even if it’s a smartphone. The Samsung Application Store will only cater to Omnia or i8910 HD phones. The Omnia II and the OmniaLITE are expected to be compatible too, but Samsung didn’t mention any intentions to expand compatibility to other lines.
Now for the catch (there’s always a catch): At launch the Samsung Application Store will only be available in the U.K., France and Italy. The store will later be opened to 30 other European countries, as well as the Americas and Asia, but there is no word yet on just when that will happen.
